The Old Town bazaar & the Ming-era garden
We begin in the atmospheric Old Town, where ornate ancient eaves rise above lively market lanes full of handicrafts, souvenirs, and snack stalls. Cross the famous zig-zag nine-turn bridge, then step into the 500-year-old Ming-dynasty Yu Garden—a tranquil world of elegant chambers, sculpted rockeries, and lily ponds, with your guide unfolding its history and design as you wander.
A stroll along the Bund
On to the Huangpu riverbank for the view that defines Shanghai—grand old heritage buildings like the Peace Hotel and the Customs House on one side, and the futuristic skyline on the other: the Oriental Pearl, the soaring Shanghai Tower, and the "bottle-opener" tower gazing back across the water.
People's Square & Nanjing Road
Into the leafy park at People's Square—the very centre of Shanghai—where at weekends you may catch the fascinating "marriage market," parents matchmaking over paper profiles. From there we wander onto Nanjing Road, China's most famous shopping street, to sample local street food like soup dumplings and crisp scallion pancakes amid the city's electric buzz.
The French Concession—or the top of Shanghai Tower
Finish among the trendy plane-tree streets of the French Concession, past 1930s stone-gate shikumen residences now dressed in boutiques and cafés. Or trade it for the Pudong side and ride the world's fastest elevator (a Guinness record holder) to the Shanghai Tower observation deck for a 360° panorama of the old and new city.
