How to choose an area
Guangzhou is large, and the Canton Fair complex is in Pazhou, on the south side of the Pearl River. Where you stay changes three things: how long you spend commuting to the fair, how easily you reach halal food, and how convenient it is to visit suppliers, stations or the airport. Start by deciding which of those matters most for your trip.
Pazhou / Haizhu — closest to Canton Fair
Pazhou (in Haizhu District) is where the exhibition complex sits, so staying nearby means the shortest walk or ride to the halls — valuable during a busy fair when you may go back and forth. The trade-off is that it's a business-and-exhibition district, so it can feel quieter in the evenings and is a little further from the city's established halal-dining areas.
- Best for: minimising your daily commute to the fair.
- Keep in mind: plan how you'll reach halal restaurants elsewhere in the city.
Tianhe — city access & business
Tianhe is Guangzhou's modern commercial centre, with strong metro connections, offices, malls and the Guangzhou East railway station nearby. It's a practical base if your trip mixes the fair with meetings around the city, or onward rail travel.
- Best for: business travel, transport links and city convenience.
- Keep in mind: it's across the river from Pazhou, so factor in commute time to the fair.
Yuexiu / Xiaobei — established halal dining
The Xiaobei area, in Yuexiu District, has a long-standing international community and is one of the better-known parts of the city for Middle Eastern, Central Asian and other halal food. Several of the halal restaurants in our directory are in or near Yuexiu and Xiaobei. If having halal options close to your hotel is a priority, this area is worth considering.
- Best for: quick access to established halal dining.
- Keep in mind: it's further from Pazhou, so weigh the dining convenience against the fair commute.
Other practical considerations
If your trip includes early flights or factory visits, also think about access to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and to railway stations for intercity travel. A hotel that's perfect for the fair may be inconvenient for a 6am departure — and vice versa.
A quick decision table
| If your priority is… | Consider an area… |
|---|---|
| Closest to Canton Fair | Pazhou / Haizhu (near the exhibition complex) |
| Best for halal dining | Yuexiu / Xiaobei (established halal restaurants) |
| Best for city access | Tianhe (metro, malls, offices) |
| Best for business travel | Tianhe or near a railway station |
| Best for airport access | Areas with a direct route to Baiyun (CAN) |
In practice, most buyers can't optimise for everything, so the "best" area comes down to your itinerary. If halal dining is your priority but you want to stay near the fair, a private driver bridges the gap — you can stay close to Pazhou and still reach halal restaurants around the city when you want them.
